The confusing ending of “Gen V” episode 4 explains: Is there a new

by Han

The fourth episode of “The Boys” spin-off “Gen V” ends rather abruptly, but just because of that it provides some clues to a new threat. We take apart what (possibly) actually happened here.

This came as a surprise! Just as episode 4 of “The Boys: Gen V” comes to a head in the big showdown when Marie (Jaz Sinclair), Andre (Chance Perdomo), Jordan (London Thor / Derek Luh), Cate (Maddie Phillips) and Emma (Lizze Broadway) try to stop Sam (Asa Germann) from killing The Woods doctor Dr. Sadosa (Marco Pigossi), things come to an abrupt and untimely end.

After Emma, who has grown to XXL size, fixes Sam on the floor, Marie wants to assure Sam that they will help and protect him – and is interrupted in mid-sentence by an abrupt cut. The screen goes black and we see a confused Marie suddenly waking up naked in bed next to Jordan. What exactly has happened? The actual resolution will probably only be revealed in the next “Gen V” episode, but some theories are already offered at the end…

CATE SECRETLY WORKS FOR THE WOODS …

How the events surrounding Sam developed was obviously not simply left out for the audience for the time being. As Marie’s reaction after waking up suggests, she is also puzzled by how she has suddenly ended up in a completely different place. Could Cate and her manipulative powers have something to do with it? One indication could be that there seems to be no trace of Cate when the fight against Sam shifts to the garden behind Dr. Sadosa’s house. So did she possibly sneak up on Marie and force her will on her to stop her from rescuing Sam?

For some time it has been rumoured that Cate is still guarding a dark secret and may even be somehow involved in The Woods experiments beneath Godolkin University. She has acted strangely on several occasions and always seemed to want to dissuade her friends from getting to the bottom of it. So is there a twist in the making here that will reveal Cate as a new villain? However, in the course of this, she would have to have cast a spell on the others present in the scene in question – and that this could be achieved with everyone at the same time is again hard to imagine, at least given everything we know about her powers so far.

.. OR IS SHE THE HERO HERE?

If Cate really has something to do with this, it’s also possible that there’s no malicious motivation behind it. It is possible that she erased Marie’s and the others’ memories of the following events at their request in order to make sure that none of them knows where they hid Sam and thus to guarantee his safety.

What they don’t know, they can’t divulge under torture or, say, in the interrogation of Tek Knight (Derek Wilson) (the fact that the latter has been banned from campus is something the junior Supes don’t know at the time).

IS RUFUS BEHIND THE BLACKOUT AFTER ALL?

However, the previous events in the fourth “Gen V” episode also allow for a completely different conclusion. Instead of Cate, the telepath Rufus (Alexander Calvert) could be behind Marie’s blackout. Earlier in the episode, after all, we saw Marie sit down next to him and then suddenly wake up in his room, while he stands naked in front of her, without knowing how she ended up there.

In fact, there is even a similar sound effect in both scene changes that could support this theory. Thanks to his abilities, it would be easy for Rufus to track Marie down. Maybe he has been following her for a while to get revenge on her for making his penis explode.

It would have to be clarified whether Marie and Co. were just suddenly teleported from one place to another or whether something actually happened in the meantime that they had forgotten. Marie’s facial expression in the last scene and the fact that she is no longer wearing any clothes there point more to the latter.

Nevertheless, teleportation could have played a role in the quick change of scene, which would possibly bring another unknown third party with such an ability into play. Unless Rufus and/or Cate are also capable of it, without it being explicitly discussed so far (in one of the “Gen V” trailers, we saw Cate apparently being teleported away from a sofa, although it looks more like she is not responsible for it herself).

We’ll be smarter in a week’s time: The fifth “Gen V” episode will be released on Friday, 13 October 2023, on Amazon Prime Video.
