Cancelled “Star Trek” series finds new streaming home: Netflix gives

With “Star Trek: Prodigy” they wanted to make the sci-fi franchise accessible to a younger target group. But Paramount+ was not satisfied with the first season and took the series from the program. The show now finds a new home at Netflix.

The animated series “Star Trek: Prodigy” was meant to open up the iconic sci-fi franchise to a younger demographic and become the first point of contact for budding Trekkies. Moreover, the series also held a nice surprise for older fans, as (ex-)Voyager captain Kathryn Janeway (voiced in English by original actress Kate Mulgrew) made her series comeback here!

And actually, the people behind the series also seemed to believe in the success of the kid-friendly “Star Trek” series: A second season had already been ordered and was even in post-production. But at Paramount+, the series was not only canceled after one season – but removed from the platform altogether. This is now a common method used by streaming providers to save (running) costs.

But what will happen to “Star Trek: Prodigy” now? The producing CBS Studios wanted to take the series to another provider – and have now apparently found what they were looking for: Netflix will offer the series a new home in the future.

NETFLIX SAVES THE SERIES

According to consistent media reports, the episodes released so far will be available on the streaming platform with the red N later this year, with the second season then scheduled for release exclusively on Netflix in 2024. This will make “Star Trek: Prodigy” in the U.S. the first season of a “Star Trek” series since “Star Trek: Discovery” in 2017 that does not premiere via the Paramount cosmos.

In Germany, the first season of the series was broadcast on free TV on Super RTL. Whether the new episodes will also celebrate their free-TV premiere on the channel, or whether they will be found at all in linear TV programming, has not yet been determined.

THIS IS WHAT “STAR TREK: PRODIGY” IS ABOUT

A group of outlaw youths finds an abandoned Starfleet starship in the vastness of the Delta Quadrant. Curious, they inspect their find and soon get into the biggest adventure of their lives, because the ship is the USS Protostar – and on board they find an old hologram of Captain Janeway, who acts as a mentor for the young adventurers*.

Together, the motley crew of misfits and likeable, quirky characters embark on a journey into the infinite reaches of space. In the process, differences must be overcome and challenges mastered so that the group can grow together as a crew.
