Escalating vacations and incredible train robberies: 4 thriller highlights that no one should miss at the Fantasy Filmfest

by Tommy

For thriller fans who like to get their pulse racing with suspense, we have four tips that you shouldn’t miss at the Fantasy Filmfest or later.

In September, genre fans will once again get their money’s worth at the Fantasy Filmfest 2024, where they can discover films that won’t be coming to Germany until later (or not at all) with regular releases. We want to shine a light on 4 real thriller highlights in the program that no one should miss this year. Each of the films enriches the genre in its own way and provides goosebumps and adrenaline rushes in equal measure

1. horror thriller Speak No Evil: successful remake with James McAvoy

Speak No Evil opens the Fantasy Filmfest in Berlin on September 4, 2024, more than two weeks before the horror thriller’s regular theatrical release. Even those who are normally skeptical of English-language remakes of European genre hits will get their money’s worth here. Because the remake of the shocking original from Denmark and the Netherlands leans into the creeping escalation with relish: this time, the sinister vacation acquaintance takes place between an American and an English couple. And if you already found James McAvoy creepy in Split, you should prepare yourself for completely new abysses in Speak No Evil.

2. action thriller Kill: You won’t forget this train journey in a hurry

Action fans who celebrate John Wick will get their money’s worth in the thriller Kill. What starts out almost as a romantic trip surprisingly changes direction when several men attack a moving train in India. On board, however, is elite soldier Amrit (Laksh Lalwani), who doesn’t want to simply leave the field to the ruthless gang. After Kill, no one needs to argue that convincing action thrillers need global locations, because it’s the confines of the crowded train that make the hard-hitting fights (guaranteed not rated for minors) an absolute experience.

3. comedy thriller A Different Man: identity abysses with Marvel star

A rather unusual mix of genres, A Different Man takes us on a journey between dark humor and exciting identity exploration: actor Edward suffers from his facial abnormality and finally undergoes radical surgery. The real nightmare begins, however, when an old friend makes a movie of his life and casts someone other than himself for the role. Sebastian Stan is allowed to show that there is more to him than Marvel’s Winter Soldier, but the real spotlight belongs to his “adversary”, who suddenly takes the path to fame that was previously denied to him. A unique thriller that holds up a mirror to ourselves

4. crime thriller Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In lets it rip

The closing film of the Fantasy Filmfest is Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In by Hong Kong director Soi Cheang, who has already disturbed audiences at the FFF with his serial killer film Limbo. This time he has grandiose brawling in mind, as Twilight of the Warriors offers the finest martial arts choreography in an unusual setting. The action film is set in the Kowloon Walled City, a lawless settlement on the outskirts of Hong Kong, from whose resurrection so much is taken out in favor of claustrophobic confinement and innovative fights. Two more parts of the crime series are already in the works. (JJ)
