Dungeons & Dragons: Adventure fantasy film set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez and Hugh Grant.
Plot and background
A few dice, the rule books, a sheet of paper with a pen, a few friends and your own imagination: that’s all you need to play Dungeons & Dragons in your own four walls. Once brought to life by game developers Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson in 1974, the so-called pen & paper role-playing game has been further developed into five different sets of rules. A player can choose from numerous races and classes, enemies such as goblins, trolls, vampires, ghouls and of course dragons want to get at the game group.
“Dungeons & Dragons” – Storyline
There are many adventuring groups on the Sword Coast, after all, there are all sorts of monsters and dragons that want to get at people. A bard (Chris Pine), a barbarian (Michelle Rodriguez), a paladin (Regé-Jean Page), a wizard (Justice Smith) and a druid (Sophia Lillis) have therefore joined forces to earn a good bit of money as thieves. However, when they helped the wrong person (Daisy Head) get a powerful artefact, suddenly the greatest evil the world has ever seen could be unleashed. Fortunately, the adventuring party is honourable and so they set out on a great adventure to right their mistake. In the process, however, they need some luck, after all, they are up against a red dragon.
With stars like Chris Pine (“Star Trek”), Michelle Rodriguez (“Fast & Furious” series), Sophia Lillis (“ES”), Regé -Jean Page (“Bridgerton”), Justice Smith (“Pokemon: Master Detective Pikachu”) and Hugh Grant (“Notting Hill”), some of Hollywood’s biggest stars get to enjoy a true “Dungeons & Dragons” adventure for the first time. Although not too much is known about the characters yet, it is now certain which classes one can expect. Chris Pine plays a bard who can use music to cast spells, Michelle Rodriguez is the barbarian who is the woman for the rough stuff, Regé-Jean Page becomes a god-blessed warrior (a paladin), Justice Smith embodies a wizard, Sophia Lillis can turn into animals as a druid and Hugh Grant plays a dashing rogue.
“Dungeons & Dragons” films
Especially in the 1980s, role-playing was frowned upon by the church as immoral. Not entirely innocent was the first film adaptation of the material, “Mazes and Monsters” from 1982 with a young Tom Hanks. In 2000, another “Dungeons & Dragons” adaptation was shown in cinemas, this time starring Jeremy Irons. Although the adaptation was not a great success at the box office, it at least spawned two sequels for home cinema.
After numerous legal tangles, a new edition of “Dungeons & Dragons” has now been announced with a cinema release on 2 March 2023. The filmmaking duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are taking their seats in the director’s chair after their last surprise success at the box office in 2017 with “Game Night”. In it, a classic game night among friends (Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams) got completely out of hand, while the audience had a lot to laugh about.
