The new The Walking Dead series with Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes starts in a few days. Now the head of the franchise is talking about crossover plans that began in season 3.
The Walking Dead universe is more fragmented than ever before. In the beginning, there was one big series that told the stories of numerous characters over 16 episodes per season. The first of many spin-off series was added in 2015 with Fear the Walking Dead. The franchise now only consists of such spin-offs.
The parent series ended in November 2022. The end-time TV colossus about the consequences of a zombie apocalypse comprises eleven seasons and a total of 177 episodes. The fight for survival will soon continue: The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live sees the return of the former lead actor of the original: Andrew Lincoln.
The Walking Dead: Andrew Lincoln’s Rick return could lead to big crossover event
Lincoln is not alone. In The Ones Who Live, the Rick Grimes he portrays reunites with Michonne, played by Danai Gurira, after a long hiatus. But what about a reunion with long-time companions such as Carol, Maggie and Daryl?
Here you can watch the trailer for the return of Rick and Michonne:
At the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour, where US broadcasters present their upcoming projects, The Walking Dead boss Scott M. Gimple talked about a possible crossover event that could bring together all the current series in the franchise. That sounds a lot like a The Walking Dead: Endgame.
TVLine quotes the series creator as saying:
When it comes to something like [an Avengers: Endgame-style crossover event across series], yes, I dream of bringing it all together, and I’ve put little breadcrumbs in that direction, but you never know exactly when and how [it will come together] for a variety of reasons.
Gimple adds a little teaser to this statement:
Dead City is a dynamic series, Daryl [Dixon] is a dynamic series, [The Ones Who Live] is … I just want to say that I’m building these paths, but it could come to all sorts of things that change it.
Gimple has been a part of The Walking Dead since season 2. He started out as a writer before he was also assigned producer duties. In 2013, he took over the series as showrunner. In January, Gimple was appointed Chief Content Officer of the franchise. He now oversees all projects in development.
