Game of Thrones shock: new series will be much shorter – but there’s good news too

AKnight of the Seven Kingdoms will have fewer episodes than the previous Game of Thrones series. But the spin-off has finally cast its most important creative personnel.
The casting for the highly anticipated Game of Thrones prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was announced just a few weeks ago. Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell will take on the roles of the young knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg.

Now we have more news from Westeros: not only has the number of episodes of the fantasy series been released. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has also cast its perhaps most important creative driving force. In addition, the series title (previously: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight) has said goodbye to the addition of The Hedge Knight and now reads much shorter and easier.

Game of Thrones prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will have fewer episodes

As the Hollywood Reporter reports, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will feature just 6 episodes. The first seasons of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon both started with 10 episodes, while the main series cut back to similar episode numbers in its final seasons (which was harshly criticized by many fans). The 2nd season of House of the Dragon will also be scaled back in a few weeks, but will still contain 8 episodes

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapts George R.R. Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight, which is only around 160 pages long, so the smaller number of episodes is not entirely out of place. However, if we remember the complex worldbuilding of the fantasy franchise, which took up several episodes each in Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, 6 episodes still seem meagre here.

Black Mirror director won for fantasy series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

For the first 3 episodes, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has found its creative force behind the scenes. Owen Harris will direct half of the Game of Thrones spin-off, setting the visual tone for the entire series.

Owen Harris has previously made a name for himself with his production of the two Black Mirror episodes Be Right Back and San Junipero. The latter was celebrated by fans and press alike and is considered an unusual and outstanding representative of the anthology format. Harris also took a seat in the director’s chair for The Twilight Zone, Misfits and Secret Diary of a Call Girl
