Did House of the Dragon just kill [spoiler]? The shocking episode 4 cliffhanger explained

by Mike

The 4th episode of House of the Dragon season 2 shocks with a tragic death and a mean cliffhanger: The fate of a main character is left open.

Warning, spoilers for the latest House of the Dragon episode follow: A central protagonist, a dragon and hundreds of soldiers are among the victims of the latest chapter in Westeros history. However, the 2nd season of House of the Dragon leaves the fate of one character open in episode 4 after the devastating dragon battle over Crow’s Rest: Is King Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) now dead too, or can he survive?

House of the Dragon season 2 leaves fans wondering about Aegon’s fate

The Targaryen dynasty’s War of Succession goes down in Westeros history as the Dragon Dance, and after the fourth episode of season 2, we now know why. During an attack by the Greens on Castle Krähenruh in the Crownlands, a violent battle breaks out in the sky between three dragons and their riders:inside.

The battle of the winged creatures ends with the tragic death of Rhaenys (Eve Best) and her dragon lady Meleys. However, the fate of King Aegon also hangs in the balance at the end of the episode The Red Dragon and the Golden One.

The inexperienced and heavily intoxicated dragon rider fell to his death during the battle. It is only later that Kriston Kraut (Fabien Frankel) and Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) find the young king motionless and burnt alongside his badly wounded dragon, Sunfire, in a wooded area. However, we do not learn whether Aegon survived this tremendous fall. Perhaps the trailer for episode 5 will reveal more?

Did Aegon survive? The trailer for episode 5 keeps us guessing

Immediately following the airing of the latest episode of House of the Dragon, HBO released a preview of episode 5 of season 2. However, the trailer offers no resolution to the nasty cliffhanger and plays with the uncertainty of Aegon’s survival

Watch the trailer for House of the Dragon season 2, episode 5 here:

In the preview, Meleys’ severed dragon head is presented to the cheering population of King’s Landing. A diversionary tactic to keep the King’s situation secret? Alicent Hohenturm says what most fans are wondering: “Is he alive?”

The status of Aegon remains unclear even after the trailer, but a meeting of the Small Council hints that the royal family has difficult decisions to make after the incident. “The king has no shortage of heirs,” reads a cynical-looking comment from ex-Hand Otto, suggesting the worst.

As House of the Dragon is otherwise very closely based on the events of the original novel, a look at George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood will probably reveal what happens to King Aegon after episode 4. So if you don’t want to have the resolution spoiled, you should stop reading at this point.
