“There’s still a score to settle”: 4 years later, Marvel is finally addressing one of its failures and raising new hopes for a possible return

In the new Captain America movie, a long-standing Marvel problem was taken from a blockbuster that almost no one talks about anymore. Now one of the stars has spoken out about a possible return.

In recent years, it has almost become a running gag that a major story element has simply been forgotten or ignored in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This was the cosmic being Tiamut, who belongs to the so-called god-like Celestials. In the Marvel blockbuster Eternals, this being threatened humanity and was then defeated, with the rest of its massive petrified body protruding from the earth’s surface ever since.

In the current Marvel movie Captain America 4: Brave New World, the Celestial was now directly addressed and integrated into the plot. Since then, an Eternals actress has also expressed whether she could return in the future.

In the new Captain America movie, Eternals will be taken up again in the story

In Captain America 4: Brave New World, the dead Celestial becomes a contested point of conflict. In the MCU blockbuster, we learn that Adamantium can be extracted from it. The metal is even harder than the previously known Vibranium and thus brings the newly elected US president Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford) onto the scene.

Since Eternals has just become relevant again in the MCU, an actress from the film recently commented on the future of her superhero character.

Will there be an Eternals comeback in the MCU in the future?

In an interview with Comic Book about her new film The Actor, Gemma Chan also talked about her Eternals role as Sersi. About another appearance of her character in the MCU, she said:

You never know. We’re often the last to know. I don’t know, I’m keeping my hopes up. I feel like there’s still a story to be told and more to tell, but we’ll see.

Chan’s statement sounds optimistic, but also rather vague. In any case, Eternals 2 was not doing well recently. After the 2021 MCU blockbuster fell far short of expectations financially, plans for a sequel were finally scrapped for good.

In an upcoming mega-event like Avengers 6: Secret Wars, the combined power of all the Marvel heroes to date could still be in demand. Perhaps Gemma Chan’s phone will ring again before the blockbuster, which is scheduled for release in 2027, is filmed…
