Warner is remaking Harry Potter as a series and filming a live-action adaptation for its streaming service Max, which will once again film all 7 of the Lightning Scar bearer’s books.
After years of speculation about a possible Harry Potter series, US broadcaster HBO Max officially announced it in April 2023: not as an adaptation of the nearly unfilmable play Harry Potter and the Enchanted Child, but as a remake of the 7 Harry Potter novels. We will keep you up to date on all developments until the start of the big fantasy series. Here you will find the following info.
Streaming start: When is the Harry Potter series coming?
2019 Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling still announced that there were “no plans to develop the Harry Potter story as a television series” and in 2021 the rumours were also denied. It wasn’t until 12 April 2023 that the tide turned: after the third Fantastic Beasts film fell far short of expectations in 2022 and basically killed the Newt Scamander spin-offs, Warner and the Wizarding World looked for alternatives to hold on to the popular brand. Thus, the Harry Potter remake in series form was born.
An official start date for the Harry Potter series has not yet been set. However, the earliest series start date is expected to be 2025 on HBO Max (known only as “Max” after May 2023). It is not yet known whether this means a German exploitation on Sky/WOW or another channel in the extension, as is usual with other HBO series such as Game of Thrones.
First trailer & pictures for the Harry Potter series at HBO Max
Since the Harry Potter series is still in a very early stage, there are no images so far that provide first glimpses. To announce the series, however, HBO Max already released a first teaser with floating candles, which announced the new edition via video to the familiar film music and Hogwarts silhouette.
Cast and crew: the cast of the Harry Potter series
All that is known about those involved in the Harry Potter series is that in addition to Neil Blair (Fantastic Beasts) and Ruth Kenley-Letts (Strike), novelist J.K. Rowling will also be involved in the series revamp as an executive producer. Efforts were also made to bring back producer David Heyman, who was already instrumental in the 8-part film series of The Magician. The showrunners who will hold the reins of the series and the directors who will direct the individual episodes have not yet been announced.
In the remake of the Harry Potter series, all roles will be recast. No actors or actresses have been cast yet. According to initial rumours, however, a more diverse cast is being sought. This means: Just like the character played by Noma Dumezweni in the play, Hermione could be cast in the series with a black actress, for example.
Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe told that he had always known that the books would be remade into a film, but believed that a guest appearance by him in it would be “probably weird”. Daniel Radcliffe ruled out his return to Harry Potter because the series makers were aiming for a reboot and he would not actively seek a cameo.
