The Walking Dead sequel with Daryl Dixon steals from the original, but…

The first 10 minutes of the new The Walking Dead series Daryl Dixon have already been released in the US. In it, we can expect a creative homage to Rick Grimes’ awakening in the zombie apocalypse.

This year, two new spin-off series continue the stories of popular characters from the ended horror series The Walking Dead. What’s next for Daryl after his controversial decision in the finale? That’s what the upcoming series The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon explores, sending the taciturn loner to France.

Before the new The Walking Dead series starts in the US in September, broadcaster AMC has already released the first 10 minutes. Unfortunately, the preview is not available in Germany, but we tell you what happens and how Daryl’s new adventure cleverly copies the beginning of Rick Grimes’ story.

The Daryl Dixon series begins like The Walking Dead once did

13 years ago, the story of The Walking Dead began with police officer Rick Grimes waking up in a hospital and a radically changed world after an accident. The new spin-off series takes that beginning as its model. Now it’s Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) who regains consciousness on a capsized boat in the middle of the sea and wakes up in a completely alien world: in the south of France.

It’s almost funny when he stands confused in front of a road sign full of French terms and realises he’s somehow crossed an entire ocean. And as befits the monosyllabic Daryl, his own The Walking Dead series also remains surprisingly silent in the first few minutes – until he finds a radio on a boat in the port of Marseille and sends a message:

“My name is Daryl Dixon. I come from a place called Commonwealth. That’s in America. I was looking for something. And found nothing but trouble. If I don’t make it back, I want them to know I tried. I’ll keep trying. “

Accompanied by fantastic music, a montage now shows Daryl’s lonely path through decaying France, taking us through striking landscapes and locations that dwarf just about every setting from 11 seasons of The Walking Dead. Some highlights from Daryl’s early sightseeing tour: the post-apocalyptic port of Marseille, the Pont du Gard and the ruins of the Château des Baux.

In the next scene, one of the most iconic The Walking Dead moments from the original pilot is quoted with a witty variation. Like Rick Grimes once did, Daryl stands in front of a door with a warning message. Here, however, it is not the admonition “Don’t open, dead inside”, but a French lettering warning of the “hungry” inside a market hall. Only unfortunately, Daryl doesn’t know any French at all and steps through it.
