Last week there were first signs of this, now comes the official confirmation from Netflix: The streaming provider is continuing its most-watched series hit from Japan: “Alice In Borderland” is getting a third season!

Last week we reported that a third season of “Alice In Borderland” was apparently coming. “Apparently” because at that time it was not one hundred percent clear, not officially confirmed by Netflix. Instead, we only became aware of cryptic posters that caused quite a stir in Japan – but were soon deciphered by fans. Accordingly, the image of a series of playing cards suggested a sequel to the Japanese Netflix hit. And as it now turns out, this is indeed the case!

“Alice In Borderland” is getting a third season! As the streaming giant has now officially revealed, among other things via X (formerly Twitter), the sci-fi thriller series will soon enter Season 3:

This should please the many, many fans of the series around the world. On closer inspection, however, the extension does not come as such a surprise.

“ALICE IN BORDERLAND”: JAPAN’S BIGGEST NETFLIX-HI

Shinsuke Sato made waves around the world with “Alice In Borderland”. With season 2, the format became Netflix’s most-watched production from Japan, which was even able to outdo the particularly large and popular anime competition there. In the end, the series not only placed in the top 10 in over 90 countries, but also became the most watched Japanese Netflix content of all time with over 200 million hours watched.

For proper classification: these numbers are strong, but in international comparison, the competition is even much stronger. For example, although the series is the top title from Japan, it is not represented in the worldwide all-time top 10 of non-English-language series on Netflix, measured by views (i.e. average “viewings”).

On the other hand, the first two seasons of the French heist series “Lupin” and seasons 3, 4 and 5 of the Spanish hit “House of Money” are among the series that generated significantly more views than “Alice In Borderland”. The measure of all things is still the first season of “Squid Game” from South Korea, which has more than ten times as many hours of viewing as “Alice In Borderland” and also leads the ranking in terms of views by a huge margin with 265.2 million views.

By the way, in season 3 of “Alice In Borderland”, both director Shinsuke Sato and the main cast around Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya return.
